8 Treat-Dispensing Dog Toys Reviewed

Pongo & Tonka’s Review of 8 Treat Dispensing Toys:

• JW Hol-ee Treat Ball
• Planet Dog Mazee
• Trixie Snack Spinner (you can load treats into this in two additional ways not shown in video)
• Ethical Contempo Tessa Food & Treat Dispenser
• OurPet’s IQ Treat Ball
• Ethical Contempo Bravo Food & Treat Dispenser
• Kong Satellite Treat Dispenser Toy
• Ethical Contempo Halo Food & Treat Dispenser

Additional toys I like but didn’t review in the video:

• Kong Wobbler
• JW Amaze-aBall
• Bob-a-Lot

Reagrding the Trixie Spinner, I actually filled it with treats in a way that makes it easiest for your dog. Once your dog gets the hang of it, or even before that, you put the treats in the half without the adjustable dial; that way you can set the difficulty level at which the treats dispense. In the video I made it easy so the treats were already in the adjustable compartment. Another way to fill it is to set the dial to the desired difficulty, remove the handle (which is a simple turn and remove), you can fill the treats into the open hole.

*****AS OF JANUARY 2014, I NO LONGER RECOMMEND ZUKES TREATS AS THEY WERE PURCHASED BY NESTLE PURINA. I RECOMMEND CLOUD STAR TRICKY TRAINERS AND MERRICK POWER BITES AS SAFE AND HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVES WHICH FIT PERFECTLY INTO THESE TREAT DISPENSING TOYS.*****

    great video…very helpful!

I have ceramic tile floors. Each of the treat dispensers that I have tried….the dogs will throw down onto the tips and they break apart….spewing treats all over and defeating the purpose. Is there a toy you would suggest to stop this issue?

Maybe if they were hungrier and hadn’t tried all the other toys they might like that dark blue one a bit more and try a little harder

This video of yours was Awesome! To see your dogs actually playing with them was great, and by seeing them using them, it helped me to see that the Triixie Spinner will be ideal for my dogs!

    Great video. Even better dogs.

Personally I think you left out a lot of description for each of these toys to give us more pros and cons to compare. For example, the first two do not seem to be as mentally stimulating for dogs. They’re essentially just nudging the balls out of the way and eating the treats left behind without any problem solving. I’m not saying they’re bad toys, but there’s more to consider in case anyone is looking for more details and cons before purchase.

If you consider the Kong toys with treats jammed in there (or even with peanut butter) the dogs have to not only lick the outside but have to literally play and toss the Kong around to jog loose the treats inside. My 5 month old German Shepherd gets too excited for toys that are too simple to figure out cause he’s left wanting more and he goes through them too fast. The toys that take him a good 20 min to go through really keep him calm cause he has to think and work about how to get them.

  15. @MimiDidi121 on October 3, 2024 at 9:54 pm

This is a great video but I found myself fast-forwarding a lot because I think it would have been better without each dog doing every one of them. It got boring really quickly on each tester. That’s not a slam that’s just meant to be positive constructive criticism. I love these type of videos and you did a great job. I think featuring one dog per dispenser would have just made a better video. Not many people want to spend half an hour watching that.

  16. @ThePongoAndTonkaShow on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

That’s very basic. This is for more complicated toys. Most people watching already know about Kongs.

  17. @samxyx on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

Which was the best one? I don’t have 26 minutes to watch this…

  18. @puddleglummarshwiggle4236 on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

You do NOT need to buy this, just put dry doggie kibble into an empty water bottle and your dog will paw at it around the room to cause pieces of kibble to fall out bit by bit…

  19. @jdhitc on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

so what about dogs who won’t even eat when your not home. I will give her bones from the butcher shop and she wont look at it if i’m not home.

  20. @pkbbby1 on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

I am glad you did this. I see now why I like west paw toys so much better

  21. @daphnecopeland6007 on October 3, 2024 at 10:03 pm

I LOVE your dogs, especially Pongo

  22. @ThePongoAndTonkaShow on October 3, 2024 at 10:10 pm

the West paw treat games were not available at the time when I made this video. I wi’ll make an updated video with new toys including the West Paw Toppl. I put the small one in the larger end to make it a little more challenging. Poor Pongo is grieving the loss of her sister Tonka, so I will have my puppy, Maeby, that would demonstrate the newer when I have the time to make a new video.

  23. @bestrickie2 on October 3, 2024 at 10:10 pm

Can the smell the treats or how do you encourage them to get to know how to use these toys?

  24. @anx2xna on October 3, 2024 at 10:10 pm

    I love the reviewers…. 🙂

  25. @MQuadrucci on October 3, 2024 at 10:11 pm

so very helpful — these toy types tend to be a pretty penny and it’s such a drag when your dog either destroys it right out of the gate, completely ignores it, or makes them feel sad and insulted "why are you doing this, I thought we were friends" oyoyoy! This was great to see these things in action, thanks!!!!

  26. @ThePongoAndTonkaShow on October 3, 2024 at 10:12 pm

Omar, 26 minutes is enough. Why not make a video yourself if you’d like to complain about the content of mine?

  27. @ThePongoAndTonkaShow on October 3, 2024 at 10:12 pm

Nope Karen, we’ve used them all multiple times and they never like the blue one.

    Wonderful💮

  29. @ohno7852 on October 3, 2024 at 10:15 pm

    This is form 2013 it’s 2018

  30. @ThePongoAndTonkaShow on October 3, 2024 at 10:18 pm

    They are both girls.

And to the person who likes West Paw, at the time they didn’t have any toys that were treat dispensing until they created the Toppl which is also awesome because I put the small one in the big one and fill it with treats or food.

Eventually I will update this video with newer toys, but I lost my see your dog Tonka a month ago so her sister is grieving and won’t really play with toys.

  31. @readingswithjenna9714 on October 3, 2024 at 10:18 pm

    Great video!

  32. @ThePongoAndTonkaShow on October 3, 2024 at 10:19 pm

Dede, I didn’t intend for so many people to watch this. It was more of a way for my own dogs to have fun, with my commentary, just took a while to go through those toys. No reason not to fast forward through the boring parts like you are doing now. Thanks for the input!

  33. @sturkfeld on October 3, 2024 at 10:19 pm

Beautiful dogs! Great reviews! Very thorough and informative!

Eventually I will update this video with newer toys, but I lost my senior dog Tonka a month ago so her sister is grieving and won’t really play with toys 💔

  35. @orion8863 on October 3, 2024 at 10:25 pm

I left youtube on autoplay for 30 minutes…

  36. @ThePongoAndTonkaShow on October 3, 2024 at 10:28 pm

I’m doing this video comment by voice so there are probably a lot of spelling and grammatical errors. Tonka, passed away one month ago, and Pongo is br grieving. as they have bonce I am over The Grieving part of Tonga, I will have my puppy demonstrate the new toys.een together for almost 17 years from the womb.not doshe will play with any games because she is blvd.. thing so she won’t play with toys. I do have a puppy who will help me make a new video with updated toys. we have over a hundred different games.

  37. @MimiDidi121 on October 3, 2024 at 10:28 pm

By the way, Amazon doesn’t seem to carry those ethical Contempo toys anymore

  38. @pahhaw4251 on October 3, 2024 at 10:28 pm

Smaller regular dry kibble also can work well in these types of toys and may be used as slow me down feeders, may be better if you’re pet has GI issues and you don’t want to give too many treats….OR you can MIX regular kibble with high value treats

  39. @undercovertomato1945 on October 3, 2024 at 10:30 pm

    Try the kong original

  40. @curious9944 on October 3, 2024 at 10:30 pm

    Very good video, thanks!

  41. @ZimVader-0017 on October 3, 2024 at 10:31 pm

I know this is an old video, but it’s the only one I’ve seen that reviews these toys. I have a dachshund who breaks every thing, even those toys that call themselves unbreakable. I was thinking of buying one of these, specifically the balls because he favors those toys, so I want to know how durable these are.
Thank you for the video, and your dogs are beautiful.

  43. @hmcneely100 on October 3, 2024 at 10:33 pm

Thanks for the tips! I have a small dog so I loved how you mentioned if it came in smaller sizes, like the IQ treat ball.

maybe the blue one with the 3 pegs would be good for my dog who i have to leave alone during the day and she doesnt have brothers or sisters, im just wondering if these would count as fun or just "the only thing to do", and i mean its just food not a real toy like a squeaky. but maybe im reading into this too much
