The best dog for you is in rescue. Let them know what your home situation is like and let them help you find the best match. First dog? Kids or seniors in the home? Have livestock around? Will it be left alone while you’re at work and school? Whatever your needs are the best choice for you is currently being fostered by a rescue near you.

i have a Papillion right now, and I must say… I never would dare to think my tiny dog could jump up to 1,2 meters. Coda is like the most chill dog ever xd, he loves snacks, sleep, playing, licking and most of all he LOVES his toys, it’s funny how papillons are good at finding entertainment for themselves xD. I’ve had 2 Papillions now, both great dogs and do not require a lot of dog knowledge (if u like bigger dogs, i would go for the Golden Retriever, also had two, they are the best cuddle buddies on the planet)

For anyone watching this video …. I’ve owned, loved and cared for dogs for over 30 yrs; multiple breeds, large and small, puppies to seniors. I would never, ever, recommend these breeds for first time owners: many of these toy breeds, Shih Tzu, Papillon, Pomeranian are too neurotic and can be little tyrants; Poodle (way too high energy; highly intelligent dogs have a way of taking over from the owner and soon will be running them); Pug, most 1st time owners do NOT understand brachycephalic dogs. I had a friend who came home from work and found 2 of her 4 pugs dead. Why? She forgot to turn on the A/C. The dogs heat-stroked. As for the Labrador Retriever, most people don’t know there’s are difference betweent the working line and show line. If they get the working line, as first time owners, oye vey.

A few days ago I had to put down my American Eskimo Gaia. I had her from 8 weeks old and she died one week shy of her 11th birthday. I was a first time dog owner in 2011 when I got her. The breed was actually a compromise with my ex wife. She wanted a Bichon Frees, and I wanted an Alaskan Malamute. We found Eskimo dogs in the local classifieds and decided to go take a look. When we got there we met the dad who had such a great personality in a dog. He was active and playing with the kids at the house, listened well, and was a people pleaser. We decided to go ahead and purchase a puppy. When asked which one, my buddy stepped in and said we should let the kids choose that they’ll know which is best. It happened to be my girl Gaia. She took to me like no canine has ever before. Loyal to no end, listened to every command, loved me with all her heart. She could do an assortment of tricks, she rode on my paddleboard with me, kayak, went canoe camping, and hiked high peaks. That little girl was my world, and if I could recommend a great breed it would be an American Eskimo Dog all the way. So much personality, and so smart. I do hope I find that kind of deep connection again, but it truly could’ve been a once in a lifetime thing. RIP Baby Gaia 5-6-11/ 4-29-22

Only a few greyhounds will have problems with cats. The adoption agency will know which dogs aren’t a good fit. My grey was bullied by the cats.

  30. @ellendouglas1970 on October 3, 2024 at 10:20 pm

Don’t you think health issues should have been considered more? Pugs have very expensive / problematic medical histories.

I am looking to get a puppy within the next year or two and I am struggling to decide which breed to get. I would like a dog that can adapt to my lifestyle (I have limited mobility) and can get along with my 3 cats.
    Which breed would you recommend?

  39. @jessiematthews6339 on October 3, 2024 at 10:27 pm

Regardless of dog breed, you need to do your research and have some idea what you’re getting into. Look online, then go talk to owners and breeders. More than one, ideally. Find out what the drawbacks are to the breed. Even breeds usually recommended for first time owners may not be right for your family or situation.

Greyhound – HIGH prey drive and need for exercise where they can get out and run, but can’t tear off into the sunset.

Shih Tzu – Need regular professional grooming and aren’t a good choice for families with small children. And the definitely DO bark!

Poodle – Can be high drive, high energy, and high intelligence. If you can’t give them the mental and physical stimulation they need, they can be a NIGHTMARE. They also need regular professional grooming regardless of size.

Pomeranian – Tiny breakable dogs that are absolutely NOT good choices for families with small children. They bark A LOT, and will need a lifetime of professional grooming. They have feisty temperments and if you don’t know how to handle them, they WILL take over the home.

Papillon – High energy dogs that can get into a LOT of mischief if you aren’t giving them the mental and physical stimulation they need.

Pug – They’re cute, but they have a LOT of health problems due to their short squishy faces. Start saving to pay the vet bills now!

Golden Retriever – As puppies, they’re sharks on legs and require a lot of conditioning not to use the whole family as chew toys. As teenagers, they are large, high-energy wrecking balls that WILL test boundaries and can get into a LOT of trouble. And, once again, there is a rather high grooming requirement.

Cavalier King Charles – Like the Pug, they have a LOT of health problems. Like most of the other dogs on the list, they will need regular grooming. That’s a double whammy to the wallet you need to be ready for.

tl;dr – All dogs have needs. If you’re looking to get any pet at all, you need to be ready to meet the needs of that pet which include medical care, proper food, exercise, training, and mental enrichment. you need to take into consideration the space you have, the family you have, and the amount of time you can invest in your new pet. Please do your homework and be responsible. The shelters are almost always overrun with the results of good intentions that didn’t work out.

  40. @tracydimond3759 on October 3, 2024 at 10:28 pm

Our pug is a coach potato, but she will bark if she hears a strange noise. She is very food obsessed too.

  41. @shanpatrickbaker988 on October 3, 2024 at 10:28 pm

I have a secret for you, if you have energy and drive, every breed is a good starter breed. Don’t let people like this convince you that you have to go through some song-and-dance recital of dog ownership before you get one that you actually want. I consider my first few dogs (the ones that were easy for "new dog owners") to be the most useless animals to ever be bred and sold…Probably because I knew I didn’t even like the breed. The other key was that I didn’t like the "first-time owner" breeds, at all. Most "easy" breeds lack any ability as a working dog, a hunting dog, a guard dog, or a sporting dog. All dogs take commitment, training, and food. All types of dogs are capable of causing damage to a home, all of them can misbehave and ALL of them can bite and pee on the floor. The best type of dog is the one you want and will love, the rest is just a song-and-dance for your idiot parents who think there are dogs that are simply born easy to deal with.

  42. @mr.hartwood7121 on October 3, 2024 at 10:28 pm

I worked in a vet’s office for a bit and I have some opinions – poodle mixes are always buttholes, pugs are just heartbreaking, golden retrievers are actually the sweetest, and cavs genuinely have no brain and I love them. Bichons are like 87% likely to bite and/or crap on you and they’re the standard Crusty White Dog

Most of the list is what some around here call "summer dogs" because they’ll have a very difficult time to get around in winter. 40 cm of loose snow and they’re gone… 😉
