10 Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds for Allergic Families

When someone is allergic to dogs, it doesn’t exactly mean that their body produces an immune response because of the animal itself, but because of particular allergens they produce. The most common allergens are proteins found in their saliva, dandruff and sebaceous glands on their skin and hair.

If you or someone in your family is allergic to these, you’ll be happy to know that there are hypoallergenic dog breeds out there.

Read up on the greyhounds they are nicknamed the "45 mph couchpotato" and they take that reputation litterally, we often say that our greys (and other sighthounds) has two speeds, 45 mph and zero, they love their lounging / sleeping (think cat in a dogs body) they love it as much as they like their short burst runs (zoomies). I have a retired racing greyhound (english) and she is so laid, she needs her 18-20 hours sleep a day. Most of the sighthounds are lazy bones inside, and contrary what people think, they make good apartment dogs. As long as they can lounge on the sofa, bed or a nice soft cushion, have cuddles, food and snacks (keep an eye on them though as 99% of them are sneaky thieves 😀 ) few nice walks a day it will be a very happy dog. The Italian Greyhounds (IGs or Iggy) has a bit more energy and dont run as fast as the big greys. Most sighhound do have a long "childhood" they are mischievious and some tend to be a bit hyper, until the age of 2-3 years old. After that they will grow up and be calm , well unless they see a rabbit, cat, babybird, deer, basicly anything fluffy and running (moving) then their preyinstinct kicks in, this is a dog that has been bred for at least 5000 years for hunting, they will hunt the prey down and kill it, that is pure instinct, that is why lot of breeders, kennels, rescues ask that you have a muzzle on it when you are out, they also advice that you do not take the dog off leash unless you are in a secure, enclosed area (bevare some sighthounds are really good jumpers) cos if the dog sees a rabbit/cat/deer/babybird/other potential prey, you can forget all about recall, it will not listen.

This is BS…I’m allergic to every dog that has been deemed hypoallergenic in this video. No kidding, every one. The problem isn’t the dogs, I like dogs a lot. The problem is people who care more about having an animal living in their home like an indoor barnyard choosing to have a dog living in their house not caring about the health of human being. Go ahead making believe this video is true. It’s not true just so you know. Selfishness is what it is. It’s despicable.

I’m allergic to dogs I only have 1 story about it. I was 9 years old and i went to my aunt’s house and the had a dachshund. He was very cute so of course I wanted to play with him. I thought I wasn’t allergic to dogs anymore because it’s been 4 years since I got an allergic reaction so I thought it was fine but no it was bad. When I was in my grandparents car I started to feel itchy and sick I thought I got bit by some mosquitoes. Then when I was getting ready to sleep I got hives and then I knew I was still allergic to dogs. Fast forward 2 years later my school had a little presentation about dogs there was a dog there. Then later I got hives once again..

    MALTESE GANG.
My entire FAMILY has awful allergies, from pollen to animal hair. Cats, rodents, etc, are all out of the question. But malteses are awesome. They have awful tear staining but I don’t care, we can handle it.

  30. @SimplicityForGood on October 3, 2024 at 9:57 pm

a dog having hair or not got zero to do with you being allergic to the dog or not… you are reacting to the enzymes in the six different proteins that comes from the skin, the saliva and the urine of any and all dogs. allergic people react differently from each other on these six different proteins and every dog, individual dog got a different level of these six proteins… there is No such thing as a hypoallergenic breed… you can do blood tests to see which of the six proteins you react to the most and you can do blood tests of Individual dogs to see if they have more or less of those six proteins… but it will vary from dog to dog in the same litter and no dog is better or worse based on the breed for specifically you before you know these facts.. any other information as in this video is false, a spread of fake information and you should never listen to crap like this. we work in a lab and create vaccines, which is called immune therapy where you get a shot about every six weeks for three years in total against what pollen or allergen you are allergic to. It can work fine for a lot of asthmatic people that otherwise could not have dogs. It can work well against pollen in the Spring. It does Not work against nut or cat allergy though.. but for dogs it often work out pretty well, and that is the only way you can tolerate a dog better as an asthmatic or allergic person. But every dog as said in every litter will differ and it costs money to test a puppy, a lot more than it cost to test a human. So the normal immune therapy shots are based on an average of all six proteins found in dogs that people can react to and it often work out well but is not 100%.. this is the only fact based and scientifically proven method to help allergic and asthmatic people to reduce their symptoms. the fur of dogs is just a means for the enzyms to spread faster in the room or house they live, but is not the fur that is the issue, and you can vacuum clean two time a day and mop the floor and every surface area in your home as well to keep this to spread further and so isolate it to the dog itself. Still it will fly up in the air and find its’ way into your lungs, eyes, noose … so go test yourself and see if you can get immune therapy against dogs if that is what you want to have.

I was surprised not to see Maltese or Scottish terrier, as my daughter is allergenic. We have both and are very loving and loyal. Although I love the personality of my Scottish terrier

I’ve had 2 guinea pigs and I was allergic to both and ever since that, I make it a mission to get any hypoallergenic pets.

  45. @eaglet2000 on October 3, 2024 at 10:23 pm

Why are the greyhound and Italian greyhound considered hypoallergenic and the whippet is not? These 3 dog breeds share so many similar characteristics.

  46. @ashmyblunt on October 3, 2024 at 10:25 pm

I’m having a hard time finding a dog that fits my requirements. I’m looking for a large hypoallergenic dog with higher intelligence that can manage being by themselves for a bit. My last dog was small and borderline retarded so it’s completely turned me off to small breeds.
