Welcome to a new series on my channel. In this series I will be training a German Shepherd Dog named Harley to be a service dog.

In episode one I will be teaching Harley the first ten steps that I follow when training a service dog. These steps do not include socializing or confidence building. These steps are for obedience, as it’s important for a service dog to always be obedient.

What do you use for rewards and how big are they?

  2. @johnmichaels4330 on October 3, 2024 at 9:40 pm

Thank you for making these videos. My wife just bought me a Belgian malinois to be my service dog, but I have to do the training. No way I can afford training and I haven’t found an org that will help. These videos are so helpful, thank you.

    EXCELENTE. Muchas gracias

  6. @jmryd9030 on October 3, 2024 at 9:44 pm

I’m wondering why you dont add the "sit" or "down" command words? Is object ultimately to only use hand signals?
Just subscribed. Great videos for my preparation to our next pup!

  7. @strawb3r_ on October 3, 2024 at 9:45 pm

There is so much awesome stuff I could say about this, but I just need to say; SHE IS SO CUTE OMG 😭

  8. @Lidlacelashes on October 3, 2024 at 9:47 pm

Thank you so much this is really helpful.

  9. @AijazRehmanecosrmna on October 3, 2024 at 9:48 pm

Prior training seems to have been conducted, and the video, the reinforcement

  10. @acd1796 on October 3, 2024 at 9:49 pm

Thank you so much. This was an excellent video and you articulate very well

  11. @legacyntd on October 3, 2024 at 9:50 pm

Skinner actually says this is actually the most ineffective form of training. You cannot change markers otherwise you confuse the dog. Marker and conditioned reinforcer are never to be intertwined. Also the way you are teaching the sit and down is bad for the puppies hips. When training a working dog we MUST train in proper positions. This puppy is completely confused.

  12. @KREOGHOSTOFFICIAL on October 3, 2024 at 9:51 pm

Is there books any one would recommend on dog training

  13. @carolepickett7189 on October 3, 2024 at 9:51 pm

I recently subscribed to your channel. I was watching your video on the Tom Rose school, and you mentioned "puppy imprinting". I have occasional litters of Yorkies and others of Doberman puppies. I do my own version of puppy imprinting on both breeds beginning at one week of age. Do you have a video detailing your own version of PI? Or could you recommend a good YT video on the subject? As a side note… many of the future pet homes we place puppies in do not appear to appreciate these efforts in fact most have had a negative response or at least a reserved one. Thank you.

  14. @jz4057 on October 3, 2024 at 9:52 pm

What are the most healthy treats for a puppy andbhow much can you give them. I am starting to train my 8 weeks Doberman puppy butbi don’t want to over feed him or give him food that he is too young for. I do give him a tiny portion of boiled beef or liver every day.

  15. @Lucia-c1t5u on October 3, 2024 at 9:52 pm

I really like your videos! Do you think you can do a video on potty and kennel training?

  16. @helenling194 on October 3, 2024 at 9:52 pm

I’m an Army veteran with PTSD and all the stuff that goes along with it. I rescued an beautiful yellow lab/shepherd mix who has an amazing personality. Very sweet and is about 4 to 5 months old. I’ve had her for 1 month and really just spent that time bonding as she’s never been in a house and had no idea how to be a puppy. We’ve mastered potty training and we’ve started with luring then sitting. I’m training her myself for my service dog with plans to take her to college with me. I have learned so much from watching your videos. Her task that’s going to be trained is pressure therapy when my anxiety kicks up!

  17. @theMickPolitik on October 3, 2024 at 9:53 pm

The not-naming of the trick/behavior until AFTER you’re getting the behavior, is CRUCIAL! I see people trying to train/teach an action, and they use the word 100x already, before they’ve gotten the correct behavior. The dog doesn’t know if the correct behavior, or the fifty random things, is the correct word association.

  18. @Fitnessoncallnaples on October 3, 2024 at 9:53 pm

    Thanks!

  19. @josephchividian on October 3, 2024 at 9:55 pm

I have a question for Nate or anyone that may know this. I see that you use "yes" amd treat when she does what ylu want hwr to do, how do you get to distinguish which action you wamt hwr to do? When do you start using words such as sit amd then yreat for her or say down. I now i may.not be explaining this right but how do you get thw dog to know what action you want?

  20. @keithlear8631 on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

Thanks Nate! These are by far the best and complete videos I’ve seen on operant conditioning and training. I learned many years ago to train competition retrievers using Rex Carr’s training method. The foundation of your program is by far more effective, and gentler, when handling dogs of all ages and temperaments. At this stage of my dog training I’m beginning service dog training and I’m using your method exclusively. Keep up the good work Nate!

    Super invaluable🎉

  22. @remleraand on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

The love in his eyes when looking at her 🥰
    He obviously loves dogs❤❤

Thank you for helping people with training!! It can get tricky and frustrating so these tips help a lot. 😊

  23. @bspano24 on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

What type of training treats make sense to use? Different ones at different stages/ages?

  24. @russguar59 on October 3, 2024 at 10:00 pm

What do you use for treats

  25. @louisecall730 on October 3, 2024 at 10:01 pm

I don’t know why you made this video because this video doesn’t help the blind people did you know some blind people can have a dog and some blind people can’t have a dog so if you have enough money you can have a service dog but if you don’t have that much money you can’t have a service dog so if you don’t make enough money you don’t get service or help for the blind because of the money that’s why I say this video was fake and stupid

  26. @bspano24 on October 3, 2024 at 10:02 pm

Thank you for this very informative video!! I’ve been seeing several accomplishments like this but never the initial ground work to make them happen!! BLESSINGS!!!

  27. @ChristinaKlein-to9kb on October 3, 2024 at 10:04 pm

I had a dog that i had from when she was a pup and i trained her myself for my anxiety, ptsd, depression, she had done a lot of stuff, but i recently gave her to my moms friend who was looking for a service dog, so i gotten a new puppy for my service dog, im looking for ways to train my new puppy, i dont exactly remeber how i trained my last dog.
So any help anyone has, would be greatly appreciated.

  28. @abigailmateo2320 on October 3, 2024 at 10:04 pm

If I follow every step from u. How can I get them certified? I have an emotional support dog. Letter was from my Dr. but I was it to b a service dog. I have taught him a lot. He doesn’t even walks on a leash after he learned the “heel” command.

  29. @yulingo5577 on October 3, 2024 at 10:04 pm

    It’s sooooooooooo cute

  30. @ChattieCathy71 on October 3, 2024 at 10:09 pm

❤❤❤Thank you soooo much!!! You make it so easy for us. My dog is trained on most basics. But I’m training her to be my service dog. She’s done really well on the 1st crowded test. And she don’t aaaaalmodt perfectly in the restaurant. ❤❤❤ Thank you again. I saved you and will be using your whole service dog training all the way through. 😊

  31. @OutOfFocus1010 on October 3, 2024 at 10:09 pm

If using a clicker how would you differentiate free and yes? Just by the movement after the click?

  32. @elizabeth1invermont on October 3, 2024 at 10:09 pm

Thank you for making this process clear. It has given me the confidence to train my own service dog.

  33. @GPKatai on October 3, 2024 at 10:11 pm

The back end awareness is great for when you teach a backup too. As an SD back up can be useful

  34. @niamhcahill5650 on October 3, 2024 at 10:11 pm

How long do you train each step if that makes sense ? For example do you spend a few weeks on "yes" before trying to lure? And what ages would you recommend to start each step?

  35. @kristinmccormick189 on October 3, 2024 at 10:13 pm

What type of food do you recommend for training?

  36. @lexsumiify on October 3, 2024 at 10:17 pm

Great video! My pup is 10 months old. Am I too late to start any sort of training for her? Regarding Marker Training, you use the words "Yes" and "Free". My pup’s name is Freide (pronounced freed). What other word would you suggest using?

  37. @urosfri on October 3, 2024 at 10:17 pm

Hi. I am just starting to train my 3m old German shepherd. If I understand your videos correctly it is fine to do several actions at the same time? So sit, stand, walk beside, down..? Or it is better just to do sit commant one day, and down another day?

  38. @legacyntd on October 3, 2024 at 10:19 pm

Charging the clicker/marker is classical, but using the clicker free is operant, not classical because it only happens when the dog performs a specific behavior. The marker is then faded. Licking the lips, the tapping of the feet etc is actually the beginning signs of extinction.

  39. @MrCurtisbwp on October 3, 2024 at 10:19 pm

    Train dog

  40. @luciocarosaxplayer on October 3, 2024 at 10:20 pm

    awesome! thanks a looooooot!

  41. @Offishal_Lifestyle on October 3, 2024 at 10:21 pm

I think im not understanding "free" and "yes" being used interchangeably. I see other trainers use free to let their dog know they are done with the current task. Not release them from obedience but release them from the task.

  42. @RocheBey-p6p on October 3, 2024 at 10:22 pm

    Awesome tutorial.

  43. @Hailey-ge9qn on October 3, 2024 at 10:25 pm

Thank you for this! It was super helpful for basic training and starting to know things we might teach them at the starting stages for a service dog! I am currently starting to train a German Shepherd to be my autism service dog.

  44. @katheyrowell2306 on October 3, 2024 at 10:26 pm

What are the treats (brand & type) that you are giving the dog?

  45. @brookew3405 on October 3, 2024 at 10:28 pm

The first step before you say yes do you want the puppy to physically lock eye contact with you or do you just want them to look up. Because my puppy is looking up at my hand. Do I want him to look up at my eyes? Or just look up

  46. @Fitnessoncallnaples on October 3, 2024 at 10:28 pm
