Dog aggression is complex and nuanced, but by the end of this video you’ll have a thorough understanding of why it happens, how it happens, and the best ways to address it.

We shed light on the misconceptions about aggressive behavior in dogs, emphasizing that a thoughtful, systematic approach, rather than one-off solutions, are needed to manage this issue effectively.

We explore the many factors that can lead to aggression in dogs, including the crucial role of fear and anxiety. Using key concepts like the Ladder of Aggression, we demonstrate how to recognize and react to signs of aggression early, potentially avoiding any serious incidents. We examine the importance of a dog’s predatory instincts and how these behaviors can sometimes be misinterpreted as aggression.

We emphasize the significance of understanding your dog’s body language to get valuable insights into their emotional state and potential triggers for aggressive behavior. We introduce the concepts of redirection and replacement, strategies to help guide your dog away from aggressive behaviors towards more positive ones.

We explain the risks of inappropriate reactions to aggression, and provide insights on practical management strategies such as the use of muzzles, desensitization, and counter-conditioning. The essential role of veterinary professionals in managing aggression is also highlighted, as is the importance of consistency and patience.

By the end of this video, you will have a deeper understanding of why your dog might display aggressive behavior and how to address the root causes effectively. This is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to create a safer and more harmonious environment for their dogs.

Whats the chances of showing a behaviour transformation of an aggressive Kangal, chow chow a big mastiff etc that is at threat of being put down

  2. @fallbrkgrl on October 3, 2024 at 9:37 pm

Ok…i can’t listen to this anymore.
Again, I have to bring up the FACT that mom’s "correct" their pups to let them know when they have done something unacceptable.
Dog’s in the "pack" will do the same thing.
    This advice is very dangerous.

No real viewable training here, just a lot of talk. I will be very interested in seeing you take on a "very aggressive" dog. So far I haven’t seen anything that would lead me to believe you can actually approach one. Sorry Zak the name of this video was how to stop aggression. No …watch this. If you can’t do it, no shame in that except you have no hesitation to condemn others that do take on aggressive dogs.

I DO NOT SUPPORT NOR RECCOMMEND BARK BOX
I put in for super chewer box and was using them for a year and my dog broke a tooth on their toy. They paid for the surgery but my dog drools constantly . He had to have his tooth removed and it was an important tooth. Those toys do not stand up to my dogs. They are garbage and are destroyed within mins everytime. No these dogs are not aggressive I have not used bark box since I’ve gotten my new dog which is the one being aggressive

Ok this all sounds good but how do I stop my dog from being aggressive and biting.

  8. @DallaceFranklin on October 3, 2024 at 9:48 pm

You guys are all really undereducated. He does in fact work with agressive dogs, and he talks the whole time to explain to people like you how to do it. There is actual science to moderating dog behavoir and none of it involves adversive training. But its not like any of you would take the time to learn about it, you just sit here saying "I want to see someone get bit, wheres the drama?" Real dog training, no matter the bread or level of agression, is showing the dog they are safe and can trust humans and other dogs. If they lash out its because you messed up, they dont do that unless they feel fearful to the point of not knowing what to do. Biting and barking is their self defense, its all they have. Zac earns their trust and makes them feel safe so that they dont lash out, and thats why they dont appear to be "actually agressive." I honestly have no idea how he is able to be patient with the people in these comments, but Ig his goal IS to educate. But dont go around telling real dog trainers they’re wrong until you read a good book or 2 on phycology and dog behavoir.
(I actually have recommendations, because im not kidding)
The other end of the Leash by Patricia B. McConnel is a good start.

I agree that all dogs are not going to like all dogs.
Main problem with this video is that it is important to differentiate aggression from reactivity. Redirection is good advice. My dog responses to leash pressure and a slight pressure can now redirect him. It redirects his focus onto ME and he trusts me to have his back and we go about our business. I taught him leash pressure when he was 6-12 months old. I never choked him or yanked him but to be honest he had to figure out that I steered the ship. Harnesses are great. I have two which I use for sniff work and “adventuring” but some dogs need more direct pressure to learn. You can add this to your training, Mr George. Teach a dog to respond to pressure in a low distraction environment and you will have a valuable tool for redirection. Some dogs need more pressure to learn but pay attention to the individual. I trained horses and they all wear bits. What makes a bit cruel is how the rider uses the reins. It is not the bit that is “aversive”.

I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

  14. @arhansen85 on October 3, 2024 at 9:54 pm

I appreciate you acknowledging the fact you aren’t a Dog Behaviorist. Neither am I. But most of these solutions enable me as a pet owner to remain irresponsible by requiring nothing from me. And literally compartmentalize my dogs problems in a bedroom. Dogs do not naturally self regulate so we HAVE TO communicate clearly when a behavior is NOT ACCEPTABLE. while affirming good ones in an age appropriate manner.

we all like to see you work your magic like say @CesarMillan who actually did does and do works with aggressive dogs because here in the USA how many dogs are in homes that were adopted from shelters or found in the streets? How many dogs have been through countless over breeding cycles by bad breeders yeah bad genes endless topic~

Most people as you say would say SHOW ME! not tell me @cesarmilan @tomdaviss @joelbeckman @robertcabral and so many others who day in and out works with aggressive dogs that show and tell with dogs that can change not a dogs life but a families!
Shelter dogs, streets dogs, abused dogs not just a $5000 labradoodle that eats out of the trash marks on a house plant. We would love to see you stop aggression of a dog or puppy instead of maybe passing those dogs or families off to some of the above mentioned names who do this each and every day. How to help families too keep their dogs instead of????? People that can and will change dogs in shelters are not welcomed into shelters! If shelters wanted to change and actually change a DOGS LIFE that would be step one that is another topic that you can’t touch on with science! How many dogs can go from an abused, tortured, neglected dog or puppy to a family dog? MOST of them! Not 100% percent but better than what we do now!

A dog that you can take anywhere with you and do anything with we will only find that out if shelters and trainers alike work to help Mans Best friend!

Man best friend needs more BEST FRIENDS ~ My friend 🙂 I want to help dogs! I want to help families I want too learn and I also want to share how to create the best family dogs!

My dog came at night to sleep with me. Ig i moved a bit while i was asleep and the next thing ik he bit me. He goes under my bed and growls from under there if anyone passes by. One day i was opening a drawer he was sitting next to it and he growled at me when i tried to open it. He often growls over the most trivial things from example if i tell him to scooch and has bit us before. Where am i going wrong i dont understand. What should i do?

  30. @abrielle13 on October 3, 2024 at 10:10 pm

We just adopted a very sweet Husky mix and she’s had a couple aggressive episodes. She bit me a few minutes ago when I told her to stop eating the terf. So… now I’m here. It’s so bizarre because it just lasted a few seconds and then suddenly back to her sweet self.

I have a brand new puppy and she is very aggressive and she wanna fight now I have a seven year old American Staffordshire pitbull terrier. He’s very laid-back. He’s very calm and he been like that since he was a baby puppy here it’s not that I keep her separate and she’s only 2 1/2 months, I have another dog a pitbull mix been abused, neglected and starved then I’m working with this puppy is very aggressive and she’s not right and I don’t want to be mean

  39. @safiteaprivate1997 on October 3, 2024 at 10:18 pm

what about a dog that will let a stranger approach when on the leash, he sniffs the stranger, acts friendly about it, and then, when the stranger moves their hand away, or attempts to either further, engage the dog or step back, then the dog becomes aggressive and lunges. It’s very strange. I don’t know how to find information on this behavior, and I can’t afford a trainer.

  40. @hamheal6598 on October 3, 2024 at 10:19 pm

What are your thoughts on why my male dog age 2.5 started being very aggressive towards female dogs about a year ago. He was fixed around age 1, could it be a hormonal problem? We never use force with him and always let him say hi to other dogs when out, but had to stop this, and keep him away from other dogs on our walks now.

  41. @JM-bb8xi on October 3, 2024 at 10:20 pm

My biggest issue when trying to train my 2 year old rescue dog is when I search biting, or anything like that I get a million videos on puppy biting/nipping. Thank you for actually posting a video on how to manage aggression, and not just pumping out another puppy/play biting/nipping video.

Did I really just waste 15min of my time with NO PRACTICAL hamd-on training? Instead of talking from some political pulpit dissuading us from using tools we know work and immediately keep other dogs and humans safe STARTING RIGHT NOW,,,, put your skill where your mouth is and show your method by handling an aggressive dog. TAKE A LEASH IN YOUR HAND AND TRAIN A LARGE BREED AGGRESSIVE DOG. You’ve offered NOTHING OF VALUE HERE. You did not gain a follower today. Full of hot air with no substance. 👎👎

  46. @MPQueen11 on October 3, 2024 at 10:26 pm

When I was going through extensive therapy I had to go through exposure therapy – avoiding your triggers outright do not help in the slightest.
Also there are truly aggressive dogs that are just aggressive and don’t just act aggressive in certain situations they’re rare but exist – also sometimes a dog only respects another dog or person who shows them they won’t back down and push back. And this video was just commentary I know it’s scary working with serious dogs but to show it is more useful than telling

Too much chitter chatter. We can all real off facts. SHOW SHOW SHOW US how you do it!! JOEL BECKMAN/ DOG DADDY say no more

  48. @threadmarkone on October 3, 2024 at 10:28 pm

I got myself a high energy dog from the pound at 1 year old. Now 4 years at 35KG! I was looking for a challenge and oh boi was it ever! My wife and I don’t have kids so it was a great fit. Cali had ripped the sleeves off the trainer at rspca so i knew what i was getting into. Exercise is good for us and the training is very rewarding.

Having a 35 kg dog go from out of control to waiting 5 minutes before eating a treat on command or being allowed at the pub for cuddles with drunk people is rewarding.

    My only advice for high energy pet owners;

They can’t be trained not to bite or be aggressive. Its like saying humans can be tought not to cry or get angry. We can only manage and treat the behaviour not erase it. Dogs and humans alike have limits.

Eating on command and fetching on command was the biggest asset to managing her behaviour. Having her stop and wait for confirmation gets her dialed in for some reason! When she gets agitated in public by a sprinting cat or screaming child, that initial stop for confirmation gives her that break to calm down. Now that its been so long since getting to that point its easy to get complacent. Because ive not seen her get aggressive towards someone in a long time, doesn’t mean i should go nuts.

All it takes is for a kid to run and hug my dog, accidentally step on its foot badly!, and that’s potentially game over!

I got the dog for companionship, a challenge plus the reward of seeing such a powerful animal be carefree, gentle and affectionate. Kind of how i wish most people would be in society.
