Most people instantly think of herding dogs, which play a vital role in many livestock farms.
These breeds corral animals through paddocks and keep the flock in formation, preventing animals from wandering off.
On a similar note, there are guardian breeds that protect farm animals from wolves, coyotes, and other predators.
Around the farm, you’ll also find less-obvious jobs that exist for doggos.
There are several breeds that originated pulling carts that delivered goods and supplies between points.
Among working dogs, there is an elite list of pups that cross off enough boxes to earn a coveted role on the farm.
These dogs are so good at what they do, they’re a must-have for making farm life easier.
In this video we have listed 10 of the best farm dog breeds that you can own.

Black mouth curs are awesome chicken protectors. My guy came to the rescue 3 times last summer chasing off a fox that had a hen in his clutches judging by the piles of feathers, but the gals were saved. It was his job. He would stay on the deck keeping watch and bound off in a flash at the sound of a disturbance. They will get between fighting roosters and break up the fight. Good family dog- sweet cuddler at night on the sofa.

We have a Texas Blue Lacy, the national dog of Texas. This breed developed in Texas for ranch work. They are herders, stay close to home, and great watch dogs quick to alert if any strangers approach. They are excellent at keeping varmints away. Willing to defend their territory, they are a medium sized dog of pure muscle willing to fight even a large coon to protect the farm.

The seldom seen or heard of English Shepherd was a common sight on many farms in the Midwest of the 1950’s. My wife and I found a good breeder almost 13 years ago. This breed would come close to a Border Collie with less need to find work. The breed is willing to dig out rats and mice. Ours is a watcher, who knows if we have a change of routine, and she is in her crate ahead of us. They tend to be barkers rather than biters, which in our lawyer society is better.

    The list starts with Corgis…
    I’m done. Credibility gone.
There are 20-30 breeds better for farm work , if this is in the top 10, i’m just going to get angrier and angrier…
Are you kidding me? Corgis were bred for cattle herding? Are you insane? Firstly, where are the cattle in Wales? Wales is sheep country. Corgies were the welsh rip-off of a proper collie…
It took generations within the last 100 years to get a collie good at cattle herding, and collies herd cattle different than what you describe… you’re describing a "heeler" that nips at the heels of cattle to move them… collies are "sight herders" where they stare down cattle, it’s insanely awesome… but Corgis?
Vermin chaser? The dog couldn’t outrun a mouse, never mind a rat… what you are thinking of, are "ratters" like terriers, and dachshunds…
do you even know what a dog is? have you seen a single dog do dog stuff? like.. this is so far off of what is real… who? why? what? what’s going on here? why is this happening? who is f**king up this badly?
i’m already upset and we’re not done with #1…

You didn’t get a single breed correctly described… this was a horrible video and I was angry at almost every claim… i’m not even sure you’ve seen or met a dog… go ahead… use an anatolian shephed as a draft animal… it will die of depression. you’re thinking of st. bernard or newfoundland…

i tried watching more… i tried… i just kept getting so mad at all the errors… just plain old stupid… like the creator has a report on dogs due–in 3rd grade–and jsut went up and winged it…

i hate this video so so so so so so so so sos os os os osos os ososo so so, sooooooo much.

    1 Trillion Thumbs Down!

The Caucasian Ovcharka is Shepard in name only… it’s a far field from the breeds that were LGD’s used to developed the breed.
Too big too heavy to do the farm work requiring athleticism…
It’s now just a security dog
Bred with Newfoundland and St.Bernard mastiff type to increase size for security and intimidation as well as trainability … along with that it also inherited the poor health concerns of the western mastiff breeds.

You missed the best farm dog of them all and it is capable of taking on African Lions too with a stronger biteforce than a lion . Its the South African Boerboel , which literally means Farm Dog , it also can get as big as 220lb , correct males can get up to 100kg quite easily , a brilliant family dog too but , if you are on the wrong side of it , best stay away , yes its also a herding dog , yes it takes out preditors and NO ITS NOT A SHOW DOG OR TROPHY , its a true WORKING DOG . On a foot note on its protection abilities , ask any South African housebreaker who lost a limb and its life which dog not to mess with , its a Boerboel . The most healthy of all mastif breeds is another plus . This dog is also surprisingly agile even though you may think its a dozy old dog . For all its calm quiet demeanor , its always watching and montiering its surroundings . This dog does not need to be trained to guard and protect , it does it naturally .

  23. @germanprepper on October 3, 2024 at 9:56 pm

I have a 100 acer farm and have many livestock dogs all are good with different jobs. With chickens 100% go with great Pyrenees best dogs ever with chickens German shepherds are great with pigs and goats but pit bull puppies are absolutely fantastic at protecting anything! They learn early what to protect and stuck to it for life. 100 % recommend german shepherds as livestock dogs and you can get an older German shepherd and still train it but also recommend pits but they require no training they will protect what they are raised with. Thats what makes them loyal.

A little known breed that has slipped into obscurity is the English Shepherd. There were a lot of these on farms in the early fifties, where I lived in Ohio. They are a lot like a Border Collie, with a little less tension on the main spring. They are very biddable and affectionate with their people.

Why no Belgian Mali? I use a Belgian for herding and guarding I’d say they’re better than Germans because they’re faster and alot more athletic.
