As someone with two whippets, let me say: they are lovely dogs who need a lot of exercise, whether running after a ball repeatedly or enjoying a long stroll on the beach. They are also sighthounds, so the moment they see something, they’re off, and it’s very difficult to dissuade them from pursuing their target.

They have unique personalities. One of my whippets loves to be cuddled and to curl up with you wherever you go. The other is affectionate but likes his own space. He doesn’t enjoy being cuddled or overly pampered and often sidles off upstairs for some alone time. He’ll also let you know he wants to be covered and tucked in—yes, he will yelp if you don’t. He’ll yelp louder and louder until he’s been covered and tucked in.

They are notorious food thieves; they will swipe food off your plate or from your worktop (if they can reach) whenever you aren’t looking. They genuinely wait until you have your back turned and then go for the food, so don’t leave anything within their reach or unattended—even for just 30 seconds. I once went to get a glass of water and came back to find my kebab remnants on the floor 🙄.

They get on well with my two Jack Russell rescues as well. They are fragile due to their streamlined shape and thin skin, making it easy for them to cut themselves on brambles and other shrubbery.

They aren’t aggressive at all and don’t have the sassy personality of my Jacks (which I love in their own way), but the whippets have very sharp teeth and can sometimes accidentally cut you when playing with their toys. They’re also bony, and it does get uncomfortable when they sit on you in an awkward position. You need to get them out of the habit of walking across people on the sofa, as they will happily do so with little regard for anyone’s personal space.

Currently I have a 9 week(?) old XL Bully, and currently she is the best pet to have in my opinion. She likes to play and sometimes might nibble on your palm. She never has bit me out of fear or anger but rather because she was excited to see me after being gone for 7 hours

I had a pugalier ,he never had to be trained, was a social butterfly , had manners, never tore up anything, he never barked and was very blinded to me

    No love for Corgis?

  17. @bordercollie1140 on October 3, 2024 at 9:52 pm

I’d strongly recommend a Border Terrier as a first dog. They are extremely loving, are a small dog but can run all day, easy to train, very easy coat to look after and any dirt just never seems to stick to them. Brilliant at vermin control and are a very funny breed. I can’t recommend this breed enough, they are everything you could want in a pet and a first time owner would have very little trouble in training them.

  18. @DannieLovesHenry on October 3, 2024 at 9:52 pm

Terrible list..vet tech for over 30 years..whippet? Good luck finding one. Great dane..NOT for 1st time owners..and they have very short life span..springers are tough..a hunting breed not for a novice

  19. @DannieLovesHenry on October 3, 2024 at 9:53 pm

Also I find greyhounds to be very vanilla and boring..Berners can be very stubborn..lots of hair..new owners need to check rescue and shelters first..pitties and pit mixes are usually terrific

  20. @ReturnOfGodEnel on October 3, 2024 at 9:54 pm

Shoutout ESPNW for an absolutely shit list

  21. @LoulouChien-i9d on October 3, 2024 at 9:55 pm

I don’t think there a. Breed for beginner. You. Need. A least. Some experience. Because. They are life. Creature. And. They are not toys. And have feeling. And. Emotions. Sooo. Every dog. Can. Be challenging. And no. Breed is. For. Beginner. If you want a dog. You need. A. Good budget. And a lifestyle. And. Unexpect. Vet visit. Some some YESS. They can be. Sick or. Not but. They are. A live so. Ya. .

  22. @empanada2019 on October 3, 2024 at 9:55 pm

2:04 my dad just said the same about my aunty’s dog 😂 (It’s a shi Tzu)

  23. @Zion-Summers on October 3, 2024 at 9:55 pm

Shih tzus are great dogs. I grew up with them and my family (parents, grandma, aunt, and I) have had a combined total of 19 in the past 50 years. They really are wonderful, sweet dogs. They need humans who are willing and able to enforce boundaries – they can be stubborn. They’re great for homes with less space, and though they like walks they’re also happy to just loll on the couch all day.

Grooming is crucial and whether you grow their hair out or get them shaved, there’s still a time and financial commitment, especially if you keep their hair long. My current shih tzu has a full coat and I do spot-combings a couple times a week when I notice tangles developing, with a full 90-minute – 2 hour comb once a week. It’s also extremely important to maintain their topknots if you keep their hair long; they can be prone to eye ulcers if their hair is allowed to get in their eyes.

Also, be prepared to shell out a lot of money on dental cleaning, though it varies. We had one shih tzu who was a hard chewer and only needed his teeth cleaned once in his entire life, but we had another one who preferred plush toys rather than hard chew toys and he needed annual teeth cleanings to the tune of $600 a year.

Finally, if you’re looking for a shih tzu make sure you go to a responsible breeder. Standard, healthy shih tzu weight ranges from 9-16 pounds. “Teacup” and “Imperial” designer tiny shih tzus should absolutely not be a thing and can result in serious health issues (if you don’t believe me, ask a vet). Ask the breeder how much the adult dogs weigh and move on if the dogs are below standard. Finding responsible breeders takes some patience, but these beautiful, sweet, playful companions are absolutely worth your dedication!

  24. @ladadog3977 on October 3, 2024 at 9:56 pm

If you need emotional support, I would not recommend a Bernese Mountain Dog. Their life span is only 6 to 8 years and are cancer prone. Especially since they are sweet and gorgeous, this choice has heartbreak all over it.

  25. @victoriasalter1701 on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

8:35 It is best not to promote pugs, as this breed is extremely unhealthy, due to their flat faces. They suffer from breathing problems because of being deliberately bred to be deformed. Breeding pugs is animal cruelty.

  26. @AntandTansWedding-mn4ko on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

    Lab/boerbull And a chow /?

  27. @colmei on October 3, 2024 at 10:00 pm

My first dog was a Sheepadoodle! *+*poodle mixed with sheepdog!

  28. @anerdygoldenagesoprano on October 3, 2024 at 10:01 pm

Poodles are so smart and VERY stubborn. Not a first time dog! Can be skittish and anxious, too. Have a couple dogs before a poodle

Boxers are often super sweet, but these are high energy dogs and I would say you need experience and a good training program. You need to put the time and work in

  29. @Dreamavere on October 3, 2024 at 10:03 pm

I am looking to get a puppy within the next year or two and I am struggling to decide which breed to get. I would like a dog that can adapt to my lifestyle (I have limited mobility) and can get along with my 3 cats.
    Which breed would you recommend?

  30. @travistaylor6110 on October 3, 2024 at 10:04 pm

    Poodles are mean!

My first dog was a Rottweiler

  38. @Lawrance_of_Albania on October 3, 2024 at 10:14 pm

My recommendation: Jagterrier, small weighting only at 10kg it’s energetic, healthy, and best all around dog. Just keep in mind, they have strong sence for prey, thus other pets are out of question (mine terrier is always jealus of other pets)

  39. @viewed_by_heather on October 3, 2024 at 10:15 pm

boxers are a terrible first dog! they have so many health issues 😢 pugs flat faces give them horrible breathing problems so I definitely wouldn’t recommend a pug to a first time dog owner. and large breed dogs have shorter lifespans like the dane. golden retrievers and labs have a tendency to be overweight and need to have their diet watched and make sure they get adequate exercise. I used to work in a vet office and saw this stuff all the time – please do your own research if you’re looking into a specific breed, this video is extremely irresponsible and leaves out vital information on these breeds!!

  40. @O_homem_que_ri on October 3, 2024 at 10:16 pm

As a Berner myself, I would say we are not for beginners. We require exercise, space and some of us (myself included) are really aloof and not fond of strangers and other dogs. I am not even talking about shedding. We (myself included again) may also be very dominant and have a strong guarding instinct, being no second to Rottweilers, GSDs and others like them.

I hate the media clips you insert in your videos. It’s distracting and disgusting, like playing ads for soda and booze in a bathroom stall when I’ve got diarrhea. Either stay on topic or stay off the internet, at least the serious parts. Don’t pretend to be an expert or source of quality information then play a clip of Dumbo being mocked for having big ears when describing the Papillon, you childish twits.
