ABOUT TODAYS VIDEO: Top 5 Freeze Dried Dog Foods
Freeze dried food for dogs is relatively new but growing fast and a great way to feed your dog with high quality nutrition as an alternative to raw frozen dog foods.

The food is more expensive than premium kibbles but you get what you pay for with higher quality nutrition.

Freeze dried dog foods are cold processed below minus 60 degrees to remove the moisture without reducing the nutritional quality of the food. They are then packaged and sealed with about 7% moisture and can last for years.

When reviewing these freeze dried dog foods, I’ve used the following evaluation criteria to pick my top 5 freeze dried dog foods:

Are there excessive or synthetic vitamins and minerals in the food?
Is the carbohydrate level in the food too high?
Are there any animal sources used in the food not named?
What is the quality of the protein sources?
How much protein is animal vs vegetable?
Are synthetic flavors used in the food?
There must be ZERO high pesticide ingredients in all 5 freeze dried foods.
There must be no Glam ingredients.
There must be no GMO’s
Has the food been overly processed?

Basically, the top five freeze dried dog foods must exceed all the evaluation criteria.
No.1 is Bixbi Rawbble Freeze Dried Dog Food.
No.2 is Steve’s Real Food Freeze Dried Dog Food.
No.3 Smallbatch Freeze Dried Dog Food
No. 4 Halo Freeze Dried Raw Food
No. 5 Primal Freeze Dried Nuggets Dog Food

The five top freeze dried dog foods are all excellent options, and which would I choose for my dog? I’d go with Bixby first, Steve’s Real Food second and Smallbatch third, but honestly, all five are great options with little between them.

If you can afford it and especially with small dogs, get some freeze dried dog food because it’s a big nutrition step up from regular dry kibbles. With no excessive carbohydrates causing poor gut health, yeast, itchy skin issues, UTI’s and ear infections, you’ll have a healthier dog as a result, saving a fortune at the vets long term.

Canine nutrition is where you want to be spending the most money. Budget accordingly and you’ll save long term on vet bills. I use the freeze dried dog food objective criteria as stated at the beginning so you know these foods meet or exceed the expected outcomes.

I have a dog with IBD and started feeding raw food, he got constipated with bone so fed him tripe and he went the opposite way with dirrohea and blood. The vets pf course recommended a hydrolised diet. The issue is its put me off raw food following the upset tummy because i was convinced a bone was shredding his bottom and the raw had given him a bacterial infection.

Issue for me is where do i go now with his diet? I dont trust Purina and the likes for good reason

Thanks so much, we do frozen raw… but it’s quite costly… the plastic bags they come in probably aren’t bpa free either. Do you prefer freeze dried to raw?

  5. @annikadjurberg6762 on October 3, 2024 at 9:33 pm

Your criteria list is definetly not followed by people😂

Thank you, Dan. YOU ARE SO HELPFUL. My dog is 13 and a half, young for a Yourkie. She has a heart problem, her heart is inlarged so her blood backs up and is creating fluid. She is now on Furosemide twice a day to reduce fluid, the cardiac specialist said is going to destroy her kidneys. We are so sad to give her a medication that we know will kill her if not her heart. Is there another medication you can recommend?

Hello Dan, I am so happy to find you. Is it possible to have a consultation with you? I have so many questions to ask you. One of them – I am trying to figure it out which freeze dried raw food or frozen one to feed my French bulldog. I have been making him a homemade natural lean ground beef with organic vegetables and touch of oatmeal for a long time. I add Adored beast health gut probiotics, Liver tonic and Phyto synergy for his allergies. It doesn’t seem it helps with allergies but defiantly its great for his gut, his poop is good, coat is good and no vomiting. I just started to add a little of Steve’s Real Food freeze dried fish after I watched your video. He loves it. I used to add to his homemade food a cup a day of Primal freeze dried beef pronto, it was a right decision, because his meals were more complete and not lucking any nutrients, but I think it made to lick his paws even more maybe because it has more carbs then his body can handle it, as you mentioned in your video. He is constantly chewing his paws especially in the middle of the night or the first thing in the morning. I do not know what to do anymore. Maybe I should try a new protein, or any supplements? I would appreciate your advise. Thank you. Yelena

Hi Dan, I thought coconut oil was good for dogs?

  13. @MissyZimm on October 3, 2024 at 9:39 pm

    Hi Dan,

Thanks for making this video. I have been watching several videos on what I should feed my 16 month old black lab. She has been on Wellness Complete Puppy food/kibble for the most part. I was supplementing with Farmer’s Dog Chicken recipe which she did not do well on – it gave her loose stool and made her itchy. I then just supplemented with pumpkin and or sweet potato. In any case, she needs to transition off puppy kibble and of course I want the best for her. I am a little confused on the freeze dried foods. Are these meant for her main meal or do you need to supplement with something like a grain. Or are these used mostly used as toppers to a kibble? And if so, is there any kibble that you would recommend? Thanks in advance! Michele

Hi Dan! What are your thoughts on Healthybud freeze dried raw?

  17. @casebeth on October 3, 2024 at 9:49 pm

My issues with all these brands is that their omega balance is lacking. I find Simple Food Project to have a much nicer omega balance.

  18. @mannyaparicio7139 on October 3, 2024 at 9:50 pm

Has anyone ever had any experience with Dr. Marty’s freeze dried dog food. I just started feeding it to my dog and would like some opinions please. Thx

  20. @vickiverhoeven on October 3, 2024 at 9:53 pm

I have 2 small dogs (Dorkie & Mini Aussie) and I want to have grains in their foods. I can not find a freeze dried dog food that doesn’t say grain free? Is there such a thing?

  21. @casebeth on October 3, 2024 at 9:53 pm

honestly shocked that Simple Food Project wasn’t on the list

Is Instinct Raw Meals Freeze Dried dog food a good kibble alternative?

  23. @lindajonesartist on October 3, 2024 at 9:54 pm

I was all set to be a skeptic, as I have pretty high standards for what I feed my three small dogs. Imagine my surprise when you listed the brands I use!

  24. @2krazybeagles on October 3, 2024 at 9:56 pm

Would it be ok to give some kibble with topping of freeze dried. Staying with same brand for both. I have two beagles that seem to get stomach gastrointestinal issues. Mostly because they seem to get into things they are not suppose to eat. Worse then toddlers with shit in their mouth. lol so stressed from them at times. 4k in vet costs recently for them. My boy got sick worse with hemorrhage gastrointestinal . Going to pet store to get one of these foods.

What’s your opinion of Wainwrights’s freeze dried raw dog food?

  26. @lark9068 on October 3, 2024 at 9:58 pm

My 8-pound, 3-year-old Maltese male has struvite crystals. Would freeze dried raw food be a good choice (over the Royal Canine OS prescription food)? That’s low in protein, high in corn, but my dog doesn’t like it much. Or any other food tips for UTIs and struvite crystals?

  27. @BlainsTube on October 3, 2024 at 9:59 pm

I’ve ventured down the freeze-dried road with my 16 year old mutt.
Over the past couple of months, we’ve been forced into a scramble find food our dog would eat.
At the moment we’re feeding a conglomeration of senior dry kibble, freeze-dried food and topping it all off with cheapie pouched cat food.
We went through lots of combinations, due to our dog just not eating. No matter how high the quality, if he won’t eat it, quality doesn’t matter.
🤓 Anyway, that brings me to my QUESTION…
Do you have any plans for 1. Air-dried food reviews or 2. Air-dried vs Freeze-dried foods?

  28. @pixgirlie on October 3, 2024 at 10:00 pm

    Thank you for review🎉

  29. @maira5324 on October 3, 2024 at 10:00 pm

Can you start your puppy on freeze dried food?

  30. @evancameron1205 on October 3, 2024 at 10:01 pm

Hi Dan, big fan of your content. My only concern here is that Steve’s Real food does contain omega – omega 3 ratio in their formulas. Their Website is very transparent as well. Just want to mention that to help others if they’re considering making the switch. Feeding your dogs “real food” will change your dog’s life for the better if you’ve feeding them kibble. It’s really inhumane how commercial kibble companies can wake up everyday thinking it’s fine to brainwash and sell basically powdered cereal balls to owners to feed to their pets. I guess it’s all about money though and not for the well-being of our animals…

  31. @treestar57 on October 3, 2024 at 10:02 pm

I ve been using Primal for year, but recently switched to Green Juju. What do you think about this company?

  32. @treasuretrovel3816 on October 3, 2024 at 10:03 pm

Because of Biden/Harris rampant inflation, Small Batch, like most companies have made changes to their recipes to keep costs reasonable. For example, chicken necks are now the main ingredient in their chicken formula. That is not great because of the excess thyroid tissue it will add to the recipe. Additionally, they now add copper to all their formulas even the beef and lamb that contain ruminant liver and so absolutely have amply endogenous copper and don’t need the supplement– Chicken and turkey liver found in their chicken and turkey formulas respectively naturally contain way less copper than ruminant liver so one could argue that they need added copper to bring up the level above the AAFCO minimum. However, with copper added to the poultry formulas as well, it leaves no room for a dog owner to rotate higher with lower copper formulas for copper safety and balance over time. For these reasons, I no longer buy Small Batch.

Thanks for this, Dan. I am transitioning my 7 pound, one year old Biewer terrier from Royal Canin kibble to Primal nuggets.
She eats half a cup of kibble a day. How much would this be in nuggets? Thanks for any info you can give on this.

Is freeze dried a better option than frozen? Ive been using steves frozen for years but wasnt sure if freeze dried would be a better option all around ie price, nutrients and quality.

Hi Dan, because I don’t know how else to get in touch with you, I am leaving an unrelated question for you here. Please do respond.
My Bindi, 14 year old Cockapoo has collapsing trachea which is extremely concerning to me. Please please advice me on how I can help her.
    She has SARDS and arthritis.
    I really hope you respond.

  41. @treasuretrovel3816 on October 3, 2024 at 10:10 pm

Steve’s is excellent but be aware that their beef formula freeze dried raw contains approximately 45 mgs copper per kg Dry Matter and their "Lamu" contains 80 mgs copper per kg dry matter. To put that in context, the AAFCO minimum is 7.3 mgs/kg dry matter and recently, veterinary experts wrote AAFCO and begged them to set a maximum copper of twice the minimum. So, if the experts believe that dog food should stay in the 7 to 14 mgs copper per kg DM then going 5 to 11 fold higher is not good if feeding this food daily. Please read up on excess copper in commercial food and how it is hurting dogs and do not use Steve’s Lamu and only use their beef formula diluted into homemade food or in rotation with lower copper entrees.

Thank you you are the best veterinarian on YouTube. I wish you live near me because I you would be my choice of veterinarians for my two fur babies Coco Chanel, my two year old, super smart German shepherd and my 11 year old toy Yorky, super lovable Mac Cheese. He loves cheese. That’s his favorite snack. Coco loves everything even fermented, sauerkraut and carrots. I do a look you up every time. I need advice on natural remedies and high-quality products for my dogs. Or I think they’re having a little bit of an issue. Did basically very healthy. No fleas no problems.❤👍

  47. @24mbronc on October 3, 2024 at 10:16 pm

Im looking for a natural way to keep my dogs teeth clean. My dog is a rescue and found out that he needed some of his teeth removed. I wanted to give him raw organic chicken feet to help with plaque build up but am worried that because of his missing teeth he may not be able to chew them enough for safe digestion. He is about 6 yrs old and 12lbs, is there another option or are chicken feet ok? I have tried brushing his teeth but he gets nervous and occasional bites.

❓️Hello Mr Scott, thank you for these suggestions! Question though…
If these freeze-dried foods are rehydrated in a crock pot on low until the correct hydration is reached, would the cooking on low destroy the nutrients?

Can supplements like green vitality, omega 3, 6 oil, glucosamine/msm be added in?
